Who your friends are matter on social media
This past week we read some articles on how social media is making us more narcissistic. I believe this is definitely the case in the world today because a lot of people focus on how many likes and shares they can get on social media. Any time that someone gets more attention on social media it inflates their ego and with it their feeling of importance increases as well making them believe that they better than everyone else. This attitude increases the overall feeling in today’s youth that how popular they are online is how much better than others they are. This online atmosphere can then lead to bitter competition and dangerous behaviors as people try to outdo others and do crazy things to get more attention making them feel as though they are increasing their social status at the same time. These new stunts shown online can then cause people to fell peer pressure to do similar things and cause a perpetuating cycle of dangerous behavior that continues to push the limits of everything else.
Another interesting aspect we talked about is how people can overshare online, especially parents. It is very easy to see how parents can get caught up in their kid’s development and believe that everyone else is just as excited about it as they are. While most people wouldn’t mind occasional updates about the children of friends and family it is easy to see how quickly it can become annoying to see constant updates of potentially disgusting topics. While I haven’t personally had to deal with this scenario yet and most of my friends have yet to have children I do generally see more updates from certain people with some of them containing sensitive information that would be better off not shared.
Finally I would like to leave you with this final fact, and that is that the internet is a dangerous place that can change how you act and portray yourself.
