Social Media and Technology is Sloppy

            In class this week we talked about how sloppy social media could be even from government officials who can’t afford it. Any mistake could potentially lead to massive consequences when it comes to the government. All it takes is one wrong word and it could send people into a panic and that could be deadly if it happens at the wrong time and place. We are also beginning to learn about how social media can truly affect how the country is ran and it’s scary to think that social media is starting to affect us in ways we may not even realize based on the information their algorithms allow us to see. Many of the Facebook posts this week and the topic of my presentation is about the filter bubbles that run rampant in social media. Its crazy to think that we give a few companies the ability to control what we see and indirectly influence how we thing and react to certain situations. The mere fact that social media increase the likelihood of group polarization is a good indicator that a new method needs to be implemented, because extreme ideas on either side of topic issues are wrong. An article I read recently had a good idea and that was to be able to reverse filter feed our pages in social media so that you are able to get a wider view of the world and not become so isolated in your own ideas. This reverse filter could allow us to gain a little of our freedom back instead of being at the mercy of the companies that provide us with what they want or think we should see. I’m excited to see where our discussion of how media plays a part in politics will go and while searching for some information I ran across an idea that I had never considered. Social media is used in other countries for political reasons just like in the United States. For some reason I have always thought of us as the leader of the world when it comes to technology and that the rest of the world is lagging behind. While true in some instances this is not always the case as other nations political figures have been using social media for some time now. Overall I am excited to see where our discussions will go, because the more informed we are as a person the less likely we are to be fooled by this technology.

This past week in class we have hit hard on the slacktivism of social media, and discussing if and when it is appropriate. Many of the Facebook posts have focused on memes showing what slacktivism is and how it is actually ineffective for the most part. My views on slacktivism keep going back and forth between totally useless to best thing ever. On one side I can see how people think that it is pointless and that it really just encourages lazy people to change statuses and act like they are changing the world. I believe this view is true when there are local issues at hand that you can have an impact on personally. But as we spoke of in class what about the times when the job or issue at hand requires government intervention and as a single individual we can’t do anything except speak out on social media to try and rile up enough people to force our government to get involved. Using Instagram for education purposes was a different experience that was very useful in understanding how education in the future may be conducted. Instagram worked fantastic for our presentation with its visual functions and slide like posts mimicking Powerpoint nicely. With it we were able to just flip through different posts and show each of our individual topics. We had no troubles with Instagram but for the specific way that we used the app it would have been much easier to stick with Powerpoint as once the pictures and screenshots were posted they could not be edited without removing and reposting. With this idea while we didn’t run into it, updating information that is relatively firm in a curriculum could run into problems with the app not allowing you to arrange where things go as they are based on time. Online Accusations can have far greater consequences than we could imagine.              Without class this past week I am going to use this blog to reflect on some of the new information that I have gained about the internet from this class over this semester. In the past I had always thought of the Internet as a tool that was only used for good and that only a few people misused it to do wrong. Now I know that there are dangers that I could only have ever imagined. In recent weeks we have talked about how the Internet changes the very way our brain thinks and how it can change the way we attack people. The Internet is changing the very essence of our society and making us more and more divided as it goes.
