Just say not to Internet addiction              This past week with the readings and class discussions I have become aware of so many more dangers of the internet and social media that I was previously unaware of. The very fact that the internet has been shown to alter brain function and that the CDC and others are beginning to classify it as a legitimate disorder is very concerning to me as I am part of the generation that has slowly grown up with all of this advancing technology. It also makes me wonder how this will affect our society in the long run because we were using the Internet freely and without reservation before anyone began to even question what the potential side effects to us could be. How many of us have involuntarily had our minds messed with without our knowledge. With any other addictive substance there is usually a warning and parental guidance that helps us make better choices but with the beginning of the In...
Social Media and Technology is Sloppy              In class this week we talked about how sloppy social media could be even from government officials who can’t afford it. Any mistake could potentially lead to massive consequences when it comes to the government. All it takes is one wrong word and it could send people into a panic and that could be deadly if it happens at the wrong time and place. We are also beginning to learn about how social media can truly affect how the country is ran and it’s scary to think that social media is starting to affect us in ways we may not even realize based on the information their algorithms allow us to see. Many of the Facebook posts this week and the topic of my presentation is about the filter bubbles that run rampant in social media. Its crazy to think that we give a few companies the ability to control what we see and indirectly influence how we thing and react to certain situations. The mere f...
If your not first your last when it comes to viral content This past week we talked a lot about viral content and memes in general. While I totally agree that it is unpredictable to guess which ones will go viral the points we talked about in class makes total sense. The memes need to be unique and be able to be modified. If its something new and we can potentially add our own twist to it then it makes it mean so much more to us. For me this is what makes memes popular with me. Another aspect that I personally look for is exaggerations of the truth that I find relatable such as procrastination memes and so forth. When it comes to stunts that are viral in videos they either need to be so ridiculously hard that others can’t believe someone could possibly do it or they need to seem simple yet have a difficulty that makes them elude people the first couple of times they do it. For songs they have to have a catchy phrase that sticks with people whenever they are going about their daily l...
Fish are Better Listeners than We Are    This past week in class we hit many different and interesting points. My personal favorite was that most people have an attention span that is less than that of a gold fish which means that if you want to vent you better find a fish because they’ll listen longer than your favorite human pal. The gradual loss of our total attention span has been associated with the evolution of technology. Since the social media age we have constantly been bombarded and attacked at all sides by distractions and constant fear of missing out on the next big trend. This has in turn caused us to constantly change tasks as we seek to stay up to date with the lives of millions of people. All this divided attention has led to a dip in productivity due to the fact that the human mind can’t focus on two tasks at once and give its best effort for both at the same time. What this means is that every time you check your phone at work your productivity is su...
